What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website saves on your device. “Similar technologies” such as your browser's local storage work in the same way, and the same rules apply to them. Some are needed to make a site work, and others, like analytics or advertising, are optional.
How this site uses them
Under UK rules (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, known as PECR, and the UK GDPR) and the EU's ePrivacy rules and GDPR, I can only set cookies that aren't strictly necessary after you've agreed to them. You'll be asked on your first visit, and you can say no and still use the whole site.
There are no advertising or social media tracking cookies on this site.
The cookies in use
This is the full list of what the site stores on your device:
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Lasts | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cookie choice (local storage) | This website | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies, so you aren't asked on every page | Until you clear your browser data | Necessary |
| _ga | Google Analytics | Tells visits from different people apart so pages can be counted once per visitor | 2 years | Analytics (needs consent) |
| _ga_<container id> | Google Analytics | Keeps track of your session state so visits are grouped correctly | 2 years | Analytics (needs consent) |
Analytics (Google)
If you accept analytics cookies, I use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to count visits and see which pages are useful, where people come from, and which device they use. This helps me improve the site. I don't use it to identify you.
Google Analytics receives your IP address and the usage data above. Google acts as a processor for me and may transfer data outside the UK, as described in the privacy policy. If you decline, neither Google Tag Manager nor Google Analytics loads and no analytics cookies are set.
Other websites
The home page can show my latest Instagram pictures and the products page can show my current Etsy listings. The pictures load from Instagram's and Etsy's servers. Loading them lets Instagram (Meta) and Etsy see your IP address, but this site doesn't set any Instagram or Etsy cookies. Links to Etsy, Instagram and Facebook open those sites, which have their own cookies and policies.
Changing or withdrawing your choice
You can change your mind at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer of any page. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, and your choice then applies from that point. If the page was already open, reload it to be sure everything has stopped.
You can also delete cookies or block them in your browser settings. Please note that if you clear your browser data, the site forgets your cookie choice and will ask you again on your next visit.
More information
How I handle personal information more generally is explained in the privacy policy. I may update this cookie policy if the site's tools change, and I will update the date at the top when I do.
